Here are some popular Indian-origin directors who have carved a niche for themselves in Hollywood.

Kenyan-born and raised in London, this Indian-origin filmmaker started her career as a news reporter. She is known for films like What's Cooking, Bride and Prejudice and Bend It Like Beckham among others.

Born in India and raised in Philadelphia, Shyamalan is a writer and director. His most notable films are : The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs. For the 'Devil', he received critical acclaim.

Indian-born and Harvard-educated Mira Nair debuted her film Salaam Namaste in 1988. Her other films include Monsoon Wedding, Hysterical Blindness, Vanity Fair and Amelia.

Tarsem Singh has worked music artists such as REM, Suzanne Vega and Vanessa Paradis among others. He directed films like The Cell, The Fall, Immortals and Mirror Mirror.

Toronto-based Deepa Mehta is known for a number of films including the controversial trilogy: Earth, Fire and Water.
